Torre del Mangia towering above of the Palazzo Pubblico The Torre del Mangia was built in 1334 and is located in Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy. The tower is the focal point of the Piazza del Campo, Siena's premier square. When built it was one of the tallest non-sectarian towers in mediaeval Italy. The Sienese survivors of the Black Plague built the small marble loggia in front of the Torre del Mangia. The tower is visible from all parts of Siena and is adjacent to the Gothic Palazzo Pubblico, town hall. The Torre del Mangia contains a bell and a clock was added to the tower in 1359. A replica clock tower was designed by McKim, Mead & White and is located in Waterbury, CT. It formerly housed the city's train station, and is now headquarters to the region's local newspaper. |
